Perhaps plated at one time.

I've had a few silver and billon coins turn golden as they tone, then eventually darken.

Looks like golden toning to me. I don't understand why it matters when you bought it, when the coin is almost 2000 years old. It had lots of time to acquire toning.

Unlikely to be toning from the image, but not impossible. I also once had a similar Gordian antoninianus that appeared to be of low gold content. I suspected it was either a very crude attempt at counterfeiting an aureus based on a surface depletion method, or was made with some presentational or novelty purpose in mind.
