FLORENCE GOULD THEATER
John Pollini, Professor of the Departments of Art
History,
History, and Classics, University of Southern California
This lecture explores new ideas about public representational programs of
Augustus Caesar and strategies in understanding and reading Augustan imagery as a dynastic narrative glorifying the emperor and
his extended family. The importance of Augustan architectural alignments of monuments is also discussed in light of the possible location of the lost tomb of
Julius Caesar. Later emperors, most notably
Hadrian, linked to the Augustan past by locating their own monuments on pre-existing architectural alignments.
