Never seen it on sculptural art.
There are in fact relatively few representations of
fibulae on sculptural art. They are a
fine detail which was either:
- not added in the first place,
- worn down quickest,
- or was painted on and is now gone.
The evidence for the use of small
fibulae as front fasteners
comes from grave excavations. Skeletons found with pairs of large fibula on the shoulder scapulae and sets of smaller ones in a vertical line among the
ribs. The examples I can re-call are from 1st century BC era graves in the Eastern Alps -
north Italy, SE
Austria and Slovenia. But I think there are other examples too.
