Merseysider with car sought for Roman Coin identification
« on: April 16, 2014, 06:36:09 pm »
No joke, this in my email today, sent by the Money and Medals Network based at the British Museum

Volunteer Cataloguer needed
Following the recent discovery in the archives at Knowsley Hall of a collection of 600 Roman coins, a volunteer is being sought to identify and catalogue this discrete but hitherto unrecorded collection, which is likely to have been at Knowsley since the 1830s or 1840s. This project would suit someone with a knowledge of Roman coinage, has a car and is based in the North-West of England. Anyone interested in this role is invited to contact Dr Stephen Lloyd, Curator of the Derby Collection, Knowsley Hall, Prescot, Merseyside, L34 4AG, tel: 0151 481 3314, email: s.lloyd@knowsley.com

Where´s all the Scousers when you need them.  ;D

It´s hard to beieve that 600 coins could have gone unoticed since the early 1830s/40s. Did they illaberate on where they had located the coins Andrew ?

It may be the requirement that they have a car is holding up the search for qualified candidates. Though the relevance of that requirement is mystifying. They didn't elaborate about where the coins were found. Maybe had they done so, the need for car would perhaps be self evident. No other requirements were mentioned (e.g own copy of RIC, raincoat, flashlight)

As for details, no more can be said until the Scouser with car turns up and can verify whether we are looking at a pile of aurei or of LRBs. The request says that the coins need to be identified. Perhaps they are all aes signatum, weighing 2 kg each. Might explain need for special transport capabilities.
