New Arles Sol variant?
« on: April 06, 2014, 01:47:48 pm »
I really stumbled upon this interesting coin:
IMP CONSTANTINVS PF AVG laureate, draped and cuirassed bust, seen from front (3/4 bust)
SOLI INVI -  CTO COMITI  S - F /QARL  Radiate Sol standing left, raising right hand and holding globe; chlamis hanging down over left shoulder.

In my humble opinion this (text)variant is not in RIC nor in Ferrando.
Am I right?

The footnotes in RIC record some examples for other RIC numbers- see no. 62 and 67 on page 239.

Yes, Victor,
The suggested abbreviation is - VI whereas my coin shows INVI - CTO which is something different

That is the break in the footnotes I posted.

Not quite; the note 'exceptional break' applies to 62, which is a right standing Sol and not a left standing Sol (nrs 56-61)

That is why I said "other RIC numbers", so, of course, not exactly like yours. The point,  is that it is not an unknown reverse legend break for the Sol series. If noted for some, it can reasonably be expected to turn up for others.

Ferrando 272.
First row right.

Sorry for the poor picture made with a poor cellular (will post a better one soon).

It is a terrible game of nit-picking, but Ferrando 272 has the VIC-TO break and mine the VI-CTO. Ferrando wanted to be complete, but sometimes you wonder what it is all about....

Ooops.   :-[
P. Ferrando correctly did the job, not me, I have watched the wrong break.
So, you are perfectly right, your coin is, as all the three other officinae not listed in Ferrando with this association of break, Sol left, S/F in Field, neither with the cuirassed bust and neither for Licinius.
Note that for SIC issues, the "one break specimens" are rarer than the "two breaks" ones.

It will go into the books as a new variant and I will inform M. Ferrando.
Thanks for your time and input Victor and Genio.
