Mitreius tesserae
« on: March 25, 2014, 09:57:09 pm »
Hi all,

Can anyone provide any information about the series of tesserae related to the magistrate Mitreius?  In Cohen, the series is represented by no. 12-15, p. 267 in v.8.  I have little/no background image and have not been able to find any images.  I have a tessera that is attributed to this series but is not in Cohen.  I don't know how the attribution was originally made.  Interestingly, the Mabbott sale looks like a wonderful source of tesserae.  It is too bad there are only a few images in the catalog.

Regards,
Kevin

AE tessera of C. Mitreius.
2.17 g, 15.3 mm, 12 h.
Clasped hands with pellet above.
Legend illegible.  Tripod.  Ex. Mabbott (1969) 5264.

I agree, the Mabot collection is fantastic. I wonder how many of the pieces in my collection hail from those unillustrated lots.

I haven't yet studied the bronze issues nearly as much as I have the lead. Cohen gives the legend as C MITREIVS L F MAG IVVENT - C. Mitreius Lf, magister of the iuventus. So, not a regular magistrate, but a teacher in the iuvenes. I have two lead tesserae related to the iuvenes:

Thanks, Bill.  This is helpful.  I finally decided to make a Forvm gallery and will upload my Roman bronze tesserae including the Mitreius first.

You have a very extensive collection of the bronze types, far more so than I. I see you're already citing Dancoisne and Cohen.

See page 89 for a tessera in lead naming the same C. Mitreuis
