Stkp's Gallery
« on: January 22, 2014, 10:25:31 am »
In the last few days I have added five of the coins that I obtained at the NYINC to my personal gallery (more to follow  :)).  All of them are coins that are outside of my traditional "comfort zone," and I had a lot of fun attributing them more completely than the attribution provided on the dealers' flips, and learning about them.  While I value concentrating in an area of numismatics, there is something to be said for venturing forth and dabbling in new areas.

Crusader States, Principality of Antioch, Bohemond III
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-105919

Feudal France:  Dukes of Aquitaine, William X
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-105918

Feudal France:  Duchy of Brittany, John I
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106001

Feudal France:  Champagne, Provins & Sens, anonymous
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-105992

Feudal France:  Gien, Geoffrey III
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-105917

As these coins are all outside of my area of knowledge, any corrections, comments or additional information would be appreciated.  I do enjoy the medievals, and hope to develop more of a library and a greater knowledge over time.

I have just added two more recent additions obtained at the NYINC to my personal gallery.  Both are AE jitals issued by the Khwarezm Shahs, Ala al Din Muhammad ibn Tekesh (1200-1220 A.D.).

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106074

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106073

I had not encountered these before and selected some of the few in a box of over 100 that were fully struck on both sides.  Interesting little coins...

I just added three recently acquired Cilician Armenian coins to my personal gallery:

Hetoum I, tram
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106143

Smpad, kardez
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106142

Levon IV, pogh
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106141

These are rapidly becoming some of my favorite medieval coins.  The coppers can still be acquired in "junk" boxes for under $10 each, and present attribution challenges.  Any comments or corrections would be appreciated.

Thanks, Joe.  All of the coins that I have been posting on this thread and will continue to post on it were purchased at the NYINC this January.  My sense is that I spent less in total on all the coins that I obtained there than some participants on this board spent on a single coin there  (The Armenian coppers, for example, cost only $5.00 each, and are not "investment" quality coins, yet the time spent in studying them bought much more than $5.00 worth of pleasure).  There are multiple approaches to collecting and to attending a coin show, and my example illustrates that one need not feel that a large international show like the NYINC is only worth attending if one is looking for higher-end coins.  There are niches for all of us in this hobby.

They are very interesting coins, and your interest in bronzes warms my heart. Some of my non-investment-grade bronzes bought at NYINC cost between $50 and $125 and that includes some of the coins I'm proudest of (including a new unique type, and a new unpublished overtype), notwithstanding the kinds words given to the EF denarii! I particularly like the billon jitals with elephants.

I particularly like the billon jitals with elephants.

I had never before seen these particular jitals with elephants until this year's NYINC.  They were also from a $5.00 box.  Stkp

While my purchases of medieval Hungarian coins at this year's NYINC were unexceptional, I did happen upon a coin weight for a Hungarian ducat (aranyforint = gulden).

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106219

I would like to learn more about coin weights.  If anyone has a copy of Withers, I would greatly appreciate a scan of the pages pertaining to coin weights for Hungarian ducats.

Thanks for posting your Cilician Armenian Coins... seems now i am a collector of them as I own 6 of them, so it is nice to see others' coins and hopefully I'll learn more about them.

So I have increased my area of collecting from just Late Roman and Byzantine to include Cilicain Armenian, Spanish & Siclian Medieval coins...  ::) 8)

THanks for sharing... +++

The one ancient coin that I bought at the NYINC is a Macedonian bronze from Antigonos Gonatas:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106286

Turning to my purchases of medieval Hungarian (finally), three denars from Charles Robert, all of the same type but with different mint-marks (one of a superior strike for the type):

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106287
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106283

When I don't encounter new types at a show, I satisfy my desire to buy with mint-marks...

Here are four parvii (is that the correct plural of parvus?) from medieval Hungary, issued by Sigismund of Luxembourg (1387-1437), the Holy Roman Emperor .  These small coins (10 mm) are typically struck on flans that are too small for the die, and I look for coins that have unambiguous mint-marks.  I culled these four from a bag that must have contained several hundred coins.  Pohl lists over 100 different mint-mark combinations for this coin.

Thanks, Joe.

Here are the last of my new acquisitions, all medieval Hungarian.

The first two are quartings of Sigismund of Luxembourg.  Once again, Pohl lists over 100 mint-mark combinations for this coin, which is often so poorly struck that the marks cannot be discerned.  This one, from a Transylvanian mint, is a clearer strike than is usually encountered:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106356
This one is quite mediocre, but the price was right, and it has a mint-mark combination that I can't identify in either Pohl or Unger.  If anybody knows of any published literature identifying this mint-mark combination, it would be appreciated:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106357

Finally, a dated inflationary denar of Louis II:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106355
(the second half of the mark bearing the "K" is readily apparent on the coin but not on the scan.

I recently added to my gallery four denarii minted by Charles Robert of Hungary in 1388.  All four of them are the same type (Huszar 495) but bear different mint/privy marks, two of which are not recorded in Huszar, Pohl or Unger.  If anyone is aware of any published information concerning this type with those apparently unrecorded marks, the information would be greatly appreciated.

I am not deeply involved in Roman Imperial Coinage but dabble from time-to-time.  I just posted four Roman coins to my personal galleries -- the first posts of Roman coins by me in quite some time.

One of them, which I was very happy to find, is a lovely fully silvered camp gates of Constantine I:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-109619

Two are Antoniniani of Gallienus:

Finally, one is an AE3 of Valentinian I:

These are apparently sufficiently obscure that I was unable to obtain any attribution assistance on this forum.

Any corrections, etc. would be appreciated.

New Miscellaneous Medieval Coins in My Gallery
« Reply #23 on: January 15, 2018, 06:17:41 pm »
I just added two new medieval European coins to my gallery (not including my newest medieval Hungarian coins, which are the subject of a different thread). I have not posted to this thread for quite some time, and am activating it to, hopefully, stimulate more discussion of medieval coins.

The first is a denaro issued in 1269 by the Italian city of Aquileia, under Patriarch Gregorio di Montelongo (1251-1269):
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-143162
I have taken a liking to the coinage of this city. This coin is my fifth (and I should have a few more to post shortly). The others are:
Struck 1398-1401 under Patriarch Antonio I Gaetani (1395-1402):
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137455
and
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137456
Struck 1402-1403 under Patriarch Antonio II Panciera (1402-1411):
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-137457
and
Struck 1412-1420 under Patriarch Ludovico II di Teck (1412-1439):
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-102428
This seems to be the most commonly encountered coin from this city in medieval times. It is also the coin that first attracted me to the coinage of this city. The Madonna and Child reverse caught my attention, as the same motif was used by Matthias Corvinus of Hungary (and succeeding Hungarian monarchs), albeit decades later.

My second new acquisition struck is a Bulgarian grosh struck ca. 1331-1355 by Ivan Aleksandar (1331-1371) and his son Mihail Ansen IV (1331-1355):
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-143170
It is a common coin. I like it a lot and may keep my eyes open for others from Bulgaria now.

There are so many coins, but never enough time (or money)...
