Very unusual tessera with animals
« on: December 09, 2013, 10:43:13 am »
Hi all.  Here is a very strange tessera or token, or perhaps an inlay.  To me it either looks like the hind-parts of five bulls, or lions, with the tails curving back underneath them, or a dog at the bottom with other animals (or more dogs) above. The image seems to change as you rotate the object, the "tails" could be feet at the same time!  Any ideas or parallels would be most appreciated.  Thanks, V-drome.

Hi all. I still have not found a parallel to this.  Any new ideas would be welcome.  Thanks, Jimi

Interesting.  Looks a bit like some Iranian/Sassanian art.  But that is likely just coincidence.

Seems to be a fox ? curling around and biting/chasing its tail.

Thank you, Shawn.  I will look in that direction for some clues!

Best regards, Jimi
