I.D. help French coin??
« on: December 01, 2013, 04:08:52 pm »
I'm pretty sure this coin is from France, late medieval, early renaissance ?. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of identification of French coins on the web so any help would be appreciated. the coins 28mm and 2.27g it is quite thin, one side has shield with 3 lis, the other side has 4 lis forming a cross. If you need more info let me know. Thanks

Hi

It is a French jeton or 'reckoning counter' not a coin, and is probably 14th-15th century.

These were used to calculate and do accounts on a cloth with squares on, a sort of primitive abacus.

Best wishes

Alan

These were known as Nuremberg Tokens and made in large numbers up until the end of the 19th century. See: http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/pages/nuremberg-jetons.html

Thanks for the information, it led me in the right direction. I managed to figure out the shield side inscription as
X AVE MARIA o GRACIA

The other side is another matter, I don't there is enough left do decifer the inscription. I found some on the web that look similar but they don't have the inscription on the reverse.
