Robert L3 Gallery Update
« on: November 23, 2013, 06:26:21 pm »
Adding a buncha’ Parthians to the gallery today:

Picked up my second Mithradates I tetradrachm, this time a Sellwood 13.3…lots of damage, localized corrosion, and an apparent repair, but the portrait holds up nicely…got a fantastic price due to the damage (on an otherwise expensive type), so I’m happy: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104341

Mithradates I drachm, Sellwood 9.1, holed and filled, and a bit worn, but a decent example of the type: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104338

A very rare Mithradates I obol, Sellwood 9.7…been wanting one of these for years: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104340

Pakoros II drachm, rarer type (Sellwood 73.13) with the lettering behind the head, holed: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104332

Phraates II drachm, Sellwood 16.3: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104336

Orodes I (Sellwood’s Unknown King) drachm, Sellwood 30.14, ugly reverse but decent obverse: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104337

Phraates IV drachm, Sellwood 52.11: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104330

Vologases I tet…whereas the Sellwood type 68’s are common, this is from the harder-to-find Sellwood type 70s: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104333

Vonones I drachm, Sellwood 60.5…already had one, but this was too nice and cheap to pass up: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104331

Got my second Osroes I drachm, this one chipped but with the portrait thankfully remaining, Sellwood 80.1: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104335

Ugly but fairly rare Vologases V tetradrachm, Sellwood type 87…already had a much nicer one, but couldn’t pass up a great price: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104334

Phraates IV tet, Sellwood 52.9: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-104329

Enjoy!

Adding two rare Parthian diobols to the gallery this evening.

First one is a Pakoros II diobol, Shore 402.  This is the second Shore 402 in my collection.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106840

Next one is very rare: a Vologases II diobol.  This coin is a variant of type 3 from David Sellwood’s 1989 article “New Parthian Coin Types” in volume 149 of the Numismatic Chronicle.  I am calling my coin a variant on the type because of the very unusual left-facing archer on the reverse…the equivalent of a celator being asleep at the wheel.  Interestingly, I spotted another coin with the same dies posted here: http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=124194
My coin: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-106841

Adding a bunch of coins I’ve finally had the opportunity to photograph.  This batch includes some common drachms, a number of tiara-type Vologases III tets, and – I’m very pleased to say – six coins that used to belong to David Sellwood.  That provenance is very meaningful to me.

Here’s what’s new, divided by categories:

Common drachms:
Orodes II (Elymais) drachm, Van't Haaff 13.3.2-2A
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115053

Osroes II drachm, Sellwood 85.2
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115054

Vologases VI drachm, Sellwood 88.18
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115055

Gotarzes I drachm, Sellwood 33.4
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115056

Phraates IV drachm, Sellwood 52.12
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115057

Orodes I drachm, Sellwood type 31
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115058

Orodes I drachm, Sellwood 31.6
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115059

Tetradrachms:
Tiridates tetradrachm, Sellwood 55.11 variant
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115060

Vologases III tetradrachm, Sellwood 79.8-10…sadly overcleaned
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115061

Vologases III tetradrachm, Sellwood 79.24
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115062

Vologases III tetradrachm, Sellwood 79.14…a beauty, in my opinion
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115063

Ex-David Sellwood Collection:
Vologases III tetradrachm, Sellwood 79.25
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115064

Vologases III tetradrachm, Sellwood type 79…light weight and likely plated, perhaps an ancient counterfeit
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115065

Mithradates I drachm, Sellwood 13.6 or 13.10
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115066

Vonones I tetradrachm, Sellwood 60.3…very rare, likely overstruck on a Sellwood type 58, Phraataces and Musa tetradrachm – as was common for this type
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115067

Orodes II tetradrachm, Sellwood 47.4 variant
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115068

Orodes II tetradrachm, Sellwood 48.1
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115069

Remarkably nice run of material, thanks for sharing.

I do have a question about the Tiridates.  The last time I looked at it, the Parthia.com reassigns only the 55.7-9 varieties to Tiridates (a type I've been looking for for a while), the others to Phraates IV altho I'm not sure how accepted this is.  The ongoing reassignment of many of the coins has been a source of frustration for my tidy mind since the darn series won't "stay still" and I seem to be chasing chimera at times.  My question is are you following Sellwood or have something more recent that challenges the Parthia.com assignment?

Thanks, and again nifty coins!

Thanks, Jay and Stlnats.

Stlnats: I certainly agree that attributing coins from the series can be frustrating since new research often seems to challenge old assumptions…particularly Sellwood’s old assumptions.

In identifying my coins I typically use Sellwood’s second edition with occasional acknowledgements to Shore and AssarParthia.com points out a fundamental problem with de Callataÿ's 1994 reassignments of the Sellwood’s Tiridates types 55.1-6 and 55.10-14’s to Phraates IV: “…if these 55.1-6 and 55.10-14 issues do belong to Phraates IV, why do they not have the (royal) wart?” (as Phraates’ other issues have)  Not sure what the Sylloge Nummorum Parthicorum will do with these when that volume (covering Sellwood 55's) comes out...but given the flux, is it safe to assume that even the SNP will be the definitive word?

Thanks for the response Robert.   It's been a bit since I've done anything with my Parthians, but my first stop is usually Parthia.com with the occasional reference to Sellwood and Shore.  I really like the series, but the fluidity of attributions is positively maddening; I like knowing what my coins are.  In any case, it appears that a couple of 55s so guess I need to get to the bank and stare at them a bit; maybe I've got another "hole" filled, at least temporarily, and didn't realize it! (LOL)

Wow, Bob,

you certainly have given us a task for the coming weekend. I will be poring over your new additions and trying hard not to be envious, especially of all the lovely tetras you have added to your treasure. Those Sellwoods from the New York auction make wonderful additions to your astonishing collection. I also like your pics which show the natural color and quality of the coins against a delicate background that does not distract from the subject.

I tried to complete the Dark Ages II section of my stuff today but was tripped up by Apple's new photo app that somehow severs the connection to my Photoshop Elements app and refuses to let me upload images. Well, I'll try to work it out myself before I give the Apple store a piece of my mind.

Keep on finding coins!

Schatz

A belated thank you for the nice comments, Schatz

The breadth and quality of your gallery continues to amaze me.  Sorry to hear about the snag you've hit.  I hope you get the app situation resolved promptly, if you haven't already.

Uploading two coins today from the period of the Early Arsacid Kings of Elymais.  First is a modest AE drachm, second is a nice billon tet:
