Countermark help
« on: September 06, 2013, 09:36:53 am »
Hi,

Please help to recognize countermark on Roman Provincial from Middle East. I see woman's figure standing left holding spear in right. It resembles the countermarks on Antioch SC provincials, but the figure there is different.

The host coin is AE25/9.5g .

Hi explorer,

The obvious answer is Athena. That's what it looks like to me. She is wearing a long dress, which is typical for Athena.

She is holding a spear, but it can't be Artemis because of the long dress. Artemis usually wears a short dress. And it isn't the "cult statue" type either, which is sometimes seen in eastern mints.

Thanks Meepzorp,

Is this standard reference for this countermark?
