Antoninus pius/Marcus aurelius denarius legend
« on: August 19, 2013, 06:37:02 pm »
Hi,

I have a typical denarius of Antoninus Pius that proclaims Marcus aurelius as the succesor.
On the reverse (Marcus Aurelius side) the legend says "Aurelius caesar aug p ii f cos".

I was wondering what p ii f cos means? Is it princeps for the second time and son of the consul? (Just a wild guess) Or does it have another meaning?

AVG PII F COS = Son of Pius the Augustus, Consul.

That "Consul" applies to Marcus, not his adoptive father: Marcus was Consul, and Pius Consul for the third time, in 140 AD.
