Interestingly there are actually a limited number of
types. Ertl has created a classification which has about 8 main
types based on body shape - rectangular, rectangular with arch, round, rectangular with wavy top, etc. Then there are a few sub-types - usually two to six -
per main
type. But interestingly, within these sub-types there is no variety. So all of
his type H3, for example, are identical. Every item is in the same place and same form on every H3. The only differences are from the mould carving - like the differences in dies of the same coin
type.
Several of the sub-types are only know from one or two examples. In fact over 90% of the plaques out there actually fall into about six different sub-types. It makes this quite a nice
area of collecting.
I wonder if we can merge the two or three threads that these are shown in and make a main sticky
thread?
