Fallen horseman of gordian
« on: June 29, 2013, 01:11:10 am »
I got a coin from forum in a uncleaned lot about a year ago and i have not attributed it until now but it is a fallen horseman which most certainly says on inscription gordian. Is this a official issue?
I LOVE cleaning uncleaned ancients.

I'm no expert on coins, but I don't think the "Fel Temp" / "Fallen Horseman" types were minted before around 340AD. A picture of obverse and reverse with weight and size would help in ID'ing your example.

It is either not a FEL TEMP or id does not say GORDIAN, unless it was tooled. A picture says more than a thousand words.

Did gratian issue fallen horseman? The coin is very worn and the inscription is blurred

No, Gratian did not issue this type. They were issued in the name of Constantius II, Constantius Gallus, Constans, Julian II and Magnentius.

It is most likely Julian II. His name will look something like IVLIANVS
