Bronze disease on Fourree?
« on: June 20, 2013, 07:01:38 am »
I have no knowledge of bronze coins or anything but a basic understandin of what bronze disease is.  I saw the green spots on the Domitian on the bottom left of these pictures, and it occured to me that if the core of a fourree is bronze, those coins could be subject to bronze disease as well.

From those with experience, are the greens spots on that fourree Domitian bronze disease, or could they be?

Looks like it. Bronze disease affects bronze coins (whether they have some silver plating or not) and silver coins of 'bad' silver, e.g. Alexandrian tets of the time of Nero. These coins were brutally cleaned so they're especially susceptible to BD.

Wow, three of those coins look to have BD. Judging by that, the others probably aren't too far from developing it.

I had a faustina fourree that I really liked but it started to get BD. I unloaded it quickly.

You probably need to treat the lot.

Sometimes chlorides present in the silver can "help" along the BD.

I am not sure of the effect of the various BD treatment options on silver.  Anyone??
