Ancient Razor or Modern?
« on: May 12, 2021, 04:44:42 pm »
This razor was consigned by a dealer. The tag says "Razor, rare." That's it. It is 24.337g and 85.8mm long.

To me it looks like it could be 19th or 20th century, but I have no razor expertise.

Anyone know if it is ancient or modern?

Thanks.

In my opinion, not 20th century.  And likely not late 19th century.  I briefly collected sheffield razors from this timeframe and still use an 1890's solingen razor when I'm not in a hurry.  That handle style would not have been typical of razors over the last 150 years, so I suspect older than that.  Beyond that, it's hard to tell and outside my area of expertise :)

What is the correct-section of the copper part like?  Is it one-piece formed in a deep U?

Yes, like a deep U or V.

There are some documented Roman-era folding knives, but they don't have the same type of handles and, as far as I am aware creating a deep U- or V- channel in metal like that was a later phenomenon.

Maybe Ron knows of some pocket knife references....

I looked around online and the examples I found of confirmed Roman era razors looked quite different than this one.  Not very definitive though, so I would not draw serious conclusions from that.  I don;t have any good references to suggest other than perhaps a shaving forum like Badger and Blade?
