I'm not sure how the new committee plans to proceed, but last year we had only one award ceremony at the end of the year because there were only a dozen or so nominations.

However, people should feel free to send in nominations to the committee at any time.  R.Smits is the new Chair, but you can send your nomination to any committee member.

It used to be that the end of the year awards were to determine the best sites of the year, selected from the sites that had already received the regular awards.  A dozen nominations could mean up to a dozen awards.  I would expect at least a few would be good enough.  All the rules and organizing means nothing if you don't give out any awards.

I'm sure I've noted a few times before that good sites don't necessarily nominate themselves - ever. I've run my site since 2004 and only in 2010, 2 years after a massive upgrade, did I wonder why the website-awards hadn't looked at it. I was very embarrassed at the idea of nominating myself. Perhaps I'm being slopey-shoulders for saying so (I'm not doing the work!) but I do think the website-award committee are in the best position to look for and nominate sites. No-one else will do so. Site-owners won't nominate themselves, and those not concerned will assume that between site-owners and the website aware committee, someone should be looking for good sites. That means going out and searching! This is a consistent point I've brought up several times. Good stuff is happening, especially with institutional sites

The other aspect of course is the internet has changed. There are fewer standalone websites (like mine) and more Tumblr, Flickr, and Facebook sites. Forvm, rightly demands more than just a collection gallery so those Tumblr, Flickr, and Facebook coin-collector sites won't make the grade, but it is a reason why there are fewer new sites. I think...

Last year, I'd say more than half of the nominations were from committee members nominating sites they found.

I'm going to nominate you, Andrew, so you won't have to nominate yourself  ;D

;D I actually was nominated in 2012 and declined ... because I knew I had a major upgrade in the works which I launched in Feb this year, with 20 new pages organised around Crawford's arrangement. I'll be honoured to pitch myself against other collector sites at the end of this year!

Someone has PMed me a reenacting site.  But it appears to operate on registration only and I have not yet received confirmation of my registration.  Will let you know when I get it what it is and what it is like.

Will there be a poll before the end of the year?  Is R. Smits still acting as chair?

I've tried to contact the current chair on a few occasions so I think it is safe to say he has abandoned the cause.  If I'm wrong I apologize.

I know I nominated Andrew's site, and I'll go ahead and nominate Steve Brinkman's and ACSearch, too, so we can have a poll of at least those three.  I can set up the poll if the committee wants but we need to have it before the end of the year so there are 2013 winners!

Have any of those been nominated before?  Even if they have I guess that would not be a problem to re-nominate them.  It would just be nice to get some new blood out there.

Here are a few options that are not directly coin related:

The Roman Finds Group
http://www.romanfinds.org.uk/
A UK association of professionals and amateurs dedicated to Roman finds.  Site highlights include Finds link, and Lucerna link with free access to many old periodicals.  dedicated to all finds so lots of antiquities but also includes some coins.

Donald Jackson's Roman Gallery of Locks, Keys and Seals
http://romanlocks.com/index.htm
Massive collection of images and information about locks, keys and seals, including rings and intaglios.

De Imperatoribus Romanis: An Online Encyclopedia of Roman Rulers and Their Families
http://www.luc.edu/roman-emperors/
Also known as DIR.  Short essays on each Emperor, including footnotes related to original sources.  Stematta of imperial families, maps, battle descriptions, etc.

Then in the area of coins:

Chinese Numismatics in Research by Y K Leung
http://ykleungn.tripod.com/index.html
A collector's site.  Quite useful updates on Chinese coins and banknotes, especially good for 15th - 19th century period.

Finally, have we already done Tesorillo (Identifying Late Roman Bronze Coins)?

This award session is for "numismatic excellence," so we'll have to do the others in a separate poll some other time (you could start it if you like, I don't think anyone would object so long as there is a vote).  I know there used to be separate awards for various types of sites, but since we are in a crunch right now, let's please just stick to the numismatic excellence award for Friday's poll.

So far we have:

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/

http://stevebrinkman.ancients.info/anonymous/

http://www.acsearch.info/

http://www.ric.mom.fr/en/home

http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com

http://www.tesorillo.com/aes/home.htm

http://ykleungn.tripod.com/index.html

To ensure quality representation, it might be worth adding those sites that scored an annual-award silver or a bronze in the past 5 years or so. It could be time for them to move up to gold. It won't be a long list (a couple each year, less considering repeats), but would ensure a systematic approach. Could the 2012,11,10,09,08 threads be scanned to see who these were?

Good idea, Andrew.  Feel free to respond with whatever sites you think should be added.  I think we should try and stay at 20 or less, personally.

Nick

Logic demands that I list all the active sites with a previous annual award but not a lifetime award; there are not many so here they are; all but one are wearing a Forum logo.

http://coinproject.com/

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/moonmoth/ancientcoins.html

http://www.ptolemybronze.com/

http://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/

http://www.beastcoins.com/

http://probvs.net/

http://www.sesterzio.eu/dracme.htm (no Forum badge - this may rule it out)

That would make 13 or 14 in all, well below the desired limit of 20. I only omitted one site, which is a discussion forum much like Forum and I don't think an alternate discussion board should be seeking Forum's award, especially as it also didn't choose to wear a Forum badge despite winning silver last year.

I think you just need to set up a poll, using the usual tool, and it's done.
