Caracalla VICT PARTHICA
« on: May 26, 2013, 12:47:58 pm »
I couldn't resist posting this  Antoninianus of Caracalla delivered this week.

ANTONINVS  PIVS  AVG  GERM
Man's radiate bust bearded, draped right

VICT  PARTHICA
Victory seated right on cuirass inscribing VO/XX on shield set on her knee.
shield behind cuirass and helmet below.

Rome AD 213-217 (217?)   4.73g    22mm    RSC: 656c    RIC: 314b    BMC: 89 note

It is listed amongst the undated coins (213-217) but I think it is dated to 217 AD?

Hi Lerian!

Really beautifull coin... And quite rare! Unfortunately still missing in my collection... In RIC the coin is only listed as scarce, but in Hill (which I use mainly because of the more accurate rarity scale) it is listed as R4! The truth is surely somewhere in between. As you said, the coin is an undated one, however there is a hole serie of dated coins (Denarii and Antoninianii) with the same or similar reverse type refering to the parthian campaign clearly dated to 217 so I do not doubt that this coin belongs to the last year of Caracalla's reign. May I ask you where you were able to buy that coin?

Regards

David

Thank you everyone, I am very pleased with it and at this point it is only my
second Ant.

I do have the corresponding denarius but I couldn't resist this when offered.

Pretty coin indeed!  Always the radiates of Caracalla, esp when they're so well struck!  Congrats!

Does anyone know the meaning of the inscription VO XX?

Is there any difference between the rarity of the Denarii between the Antoninianii according to Hill?

Hi,

VO XX, given the date of the coin, is for the vows (VOTA (I wish off the top of my head I could remember but I think it was suscepta rather than soluta)) discharged on the 20th anniversary of Caracalla's reign.

Mauseus

Is there any difference between the rarity of the Denarii and the Antoninianii according to Hill?

The antoninianus is Hill 1599 (R4), the denarius Hill 1603 (R3).

From the specimens I have seen over the decades, I would say the antoninianus is maybe five times rarer than the denarius.

Thanks for your explanations, mauseus and Curtis!

I counted the specimen on acsearch. There are twice as much antoninianus (5) as denarius (11). I wonder how valid/meaningful acsearch could be in comparison to hoard founds and literature like RIC, Hill and others?
