Coin with deposit - Health status of coin?
« on: May 05, 2013, 02:16:30 pm »
Hello.

Bought this coin a week back at a coin fair. There is some yellow deposit above head on reverse. It seems to be on top of the metal, but not sure. Is it likely that this will be a problem for the health of the coin later on?

Thanks in advance,

Patrik

Hi Patrik, can you post a larger picture?

I don't think so. It appears to be a combination of inert metal/"horn silver" deposit and some ancient damage to the flan filled with impacted dirt. I see no evidence of "bronze disease."

I think this picture will be a bit bigger.

Edit: I don't know if it's relevant, but the deposit is rock solid

BTW: It  is on the obverse, not the reverse.

The picture in large size is too blurry, it could either be clumsily applied solder to plug an attempt to drill a hole (not very likely in my opinion), or something 'natural'. What, I can't say. But whatever it is, it is not going to be something progressive, like the so-called bronze disease. So if you store the coin properly, it will look more or less the same 100 years from now.
