Nice coin, quadrans!

Actually much nicer than you already think it is ....

Although RIC only lists this type from Trier, they were actually also struck at a few other mints after Constantine's victories on his Italian campaign c.312. The only way to identity the mint (given no mintmark) is by bust style, and yours is from Ticinum. These may have been struck after Constantine's final victory over Maxentius, or possibly earlier after his initial northern Italian victories as he took control of the Ticinum mint.

I'm guessing you got it for a "Trier" price... well done!

As far as different mints goes, these (Sol & Mars bust reverses) are known from London, Ticinum and Aquileia in addition to Trier.

The London type (Sol)  is described in:

"An Unpublished Nummus of Constantine I of the Mint of London" by Georges Gautier, published in Numismatic Chronicle 152 (1992)

The Ticinum and Aquileia coins are covered in:

"Folles sans marque emis par Consatntin en Italie" by Pierre Bastien, published in Schweizer Munzblatter 24 (1974)

The Mars type from Aquileia also occurs with a spectacular helmetted obverse bust with Constantine holding plumbata (throwing spears) - HD Rauch 80 # 266, Berlin

Other than different mints, there are also left facing mars reverses from Trier (listed in Cohen, but not in RIC) - Numis Lanz 132 # 522

There are also coins from Trier issued c.312-313 at a post-reduction weight of 1/96lb whose style is significantly different than the more common pre-reduction ones. I don't believe these have been published.

Hi Lee,
Yes - Trier also issued the Mars/Sol bust types at the reduced weight standard (quite easy to identify based on style alone), but as far as I'm aware they were the only mint to do so.

I'm struggling to find any published or online examples of clearly reduced weight/flan size coins of either type  ???

Thanks Ben  :)

They both clearly look like reduced examples. Interesting that RIC 6 alludes to the reduced weight issue but then omits them from RIC 7. Similar to the unsatisfactory presentation of the left star issue of London that should also be broken down into two different size/weight standards.

Cheers

Hi Quadrans, i'm not really sure that this reduced issue is very rare. Maybe if we pay attention, we could be able to find more examples.
Best regards,
Nicola

I don't collect Constantinian coins any longer but, but still have a lot of them in my collection. This was an interesting thread. Thanks for all the information. Congius's second listed paper by Bastien was easy to find:

http://retro.seals.ch/digbib/view?rid=smb-001:1973-1977:23-27::712

I still enjoy reading about these coins.
