« on: May 01, 2013, 12:28:49 pm »
Interesting coin, but cannot seem to ID it..

Large one at about 24mm and 10 grams...

Any thoughts?

Hello Marsha,

The figure on the reverse is a river-god. The over-turned vase/urn at lower left represents water flowing. The god is holding a reed in his hand. These are common symbols on these types of coins.

I can only take a guess as to where it may have been minted. I know that Moesia and Thrace minted many of these types of coins. You can statrt your search there.

As it has Latin obverse legend, it is Colonial
and the emperor is Severus Alexander.

A bit too late:

Some facts:
(1) A provincial coin, but not Thrace, but more in the East.
(2) The legend is written in Latin. Therefore it must be a Colonia
(3) The style of the legend is very crude. I think I can read something like
IMP CAE [?] M AVR SEV [AV?] ANDER
      making it Severus Alexander
(4) A similar obv. I found for Severus Alexander from Ake-Ptolemais on Wildwinds.

And finally I found your type in the Helios Auction 3, 29./30. April 2009 (collection of Reinhard Falter) under Ake-Ptolemais at the river Belos as Nr.744. His references: BMC 43; Imhoof-Blumer (1924) 492; Kadman 189.
From same dies. Rev.: COLONIA PTOLEM (or similar)

The river-god is Belos, today Naaman river.

Best regards

Hi folks,

Wow!!! A river-god coin from the Holy Land (a place with a dry climate). That is very unusual. It must be quite rare.

I think that city is in modern-day Israel or Lebanon, right?

Phoenicia, but I've got no further than that. It needn't have been a big river, just one that was of major importance to the city.
