Odd style Julian II... Good or not ?
« on: March 26, 2013, 06:09:37 am »
I had this offered via internet. I'm quite familiar with the type, but I've never seen such odd style. What do you think ?

@robert : my opinion too. it's a too bizar style, or it's an imitation or temporary forgery
@mari : i couldn't find such style in die match, not in the genuine listings, but also not in the 'fakes gallery'...

Wow that is a very wierd coin stylistically. I thought I had seen something similar before. The bull reminds me of this barbaric issue, but the rest of the coin doesnt look barbaric.
The silvering looks modern too, but I may be wrong.
I think it is fake but Robert's opinion probably carries more weight.

I said it was like, 23 coin from the top down.
Check the edges of the coin, the patina is not very strong and loose. For me everything in coin said to be genuine.
Really, the style is barbaric, but seeing as the coin is minted in Constantinople. But despite these differences, there is always a possibility of unknown differences and new discoveries from antiquity.

The style looks odd because the mint is Arles (Constantina) - and Arles mint Julian bulls do look odd when compared to those produced by other mints because the Arles style is quite different.

This is RIC Arles 318 prima officina.  PCONST

Here is a pic of another (in much better condition, even has traces of silvering):
