Roman Republic Quadrans
« on: March 04, 2013, 12:02:25 pm »
Hello all,

Attached is a photo of a RR Quadrans from my gallery.  I have been unable to identify it.  Sorry, don't have coin with me, so no weight and diameter.  I can confirm that it's very nearly the same size and weight of my other RR Quadrans.

O: bust R

R: Prow of Galley with S above

Thanks in advance,
Sosius

There are some possibilities (Sydenham 143a, Sydenham 145a...) but I'm convinced it's a semis, not a quadrans. The 'S' is the mark of value... Weight and size would be a great help for a correct determination of this coin...

Mr. Smits,

I am home now, and I did have "Semis?" written on the flip, but I second-guessed myself and assumed it was a quadrans.  Shows how little I know about RR bronzes, I guess.

Size is 21-22mm
Weight is 6.75g

Thanks,
Sosius

This semis is a Spanish imitative issue, probably mid second century BC. Nice coin.
