Help identifying coin please
« on: February 19, 2013, 04:39:14 pm »
Hello, this is my first post on this forum. I was in Iraq in 2006-2007 and picked this coin up in Babylon, Iraq. I am trying to figure out the origin/value but I have nothin to go off of. Any help is appreciated and I can take more pictures when I get home. Thanks!

Tilt your head to the left in order to see the correct positions of the coins, not sure why the computer did that when I uploaded them.

Hi Nick

Please always give a diameter and if possible a weight when asking for an identification: it helps a lot.

The types are those of a Parthian tetradrachm, but going by the size of your palm this has to be drachm size or smaller, so I'd say a tourist fake I'm afraid.

Best wishes

Alan

Its modelled on a tetradrachm of Vologases IV, I think (cf Sellwood 84 for type).  Agree seems way too small for a legit tet.

Here's a Parthia.com link of what I think they were going for:

Should probably be Parthian Kingdom, Vologases IV.
Diademed, bearded bust left, wearing tiara / Tyche standing right, holding sceptre and presenting diadem to Vologases seated left.
Sellwood type 84.

But - I can't be quite sure, but it has some cast-like appearance to me. Maybe some more opinions?

Ooops. Two postings during me writing another one.
Anybody else shares my opinion about casting?

Really hard to say from the pix.  I've seen similar appearance on worn tets at times but pix just aren't clear enough for me.  And its not too far off the style of these later coins. The key question is size and weight mentioned by Manzikert.  Should be 26mm/1" and around 13-14 gms.  Looks much smaller, drachm size.

It is 24-25mm and possibly cast now that I look at it.

Pushed, sharpend and rotated the pics a little for easier viewing...

As was said, something with detail that soft is unlikely to be real.
