Caligula & Agrippina AE23, Sinope?
« on: February 11, 2013, 07:06:13 am »
Please, help me to ID this coin correctly. I think it's Caligula & Agrippina Senior AE from Sinope, #416 from D.Sear's "Greek Imperial coins & Their Values". It has no picture for this, so...
There would be no question if I could find any other example of this coin in the WEB. But I couldn't...

Thanks in advance!

You have a wonderful representation of this Julio Claudian issue!!  They are not easy to find, in the time of Claudius, this issue was struck with Agrippina and himself from Sinope also, this is not as nice as yours..

Sinope. Claudius, with Agrippina Junior. AD 41-54. Æ 27mm (12.79 g, 2h). Dated CY 100 (October AD 54). Laureate head of Claudius left / Head of Agrippina Junior left, wearing hair in long plait; date in legend. RPC I 2134/2 = Amandry, Notes p. 74 and pl. V, c (this coin); RG 95 corr. (date read as AD 55/6); SNG Copenhagen -.

Claudius died 13 October AD 54

Sinope. Britannicus, with Nero as Caesar. AD 41-55. Æ 22mm (7.43 g, 2h). Dated CY 100 (AD 54/5). Laureate head of Britannicus left / Laureate head of Nero left; date in legend. RPC 2135; Amandry, Notes II, pp. 72-4; RG -.

Sinope also had an issue with Britannicus with Nero as Caesar.

Here is one more wonderful issue I would love to have.  Claudius and Messalina from Sinope.   Julio Claudian propaganda was heavy here!!

Claudius, AE of Sinope, Paphlagonia. Dated year 86 = 40-41 AD. 11.34 g. T CLAVDIVS CAES AVG C I F ANNO LXXXVI, laureate head right / MESSALINA AVGVSTA, draped bust of Messalina right. RPC 2130 (this coin).

The date of 40-41 is very interesting??  Caligula died in 41.

Thank you for your comments!
I think that the date on my coin is also rather interesting, just for the same reason. Caligula became an emperor in 37, and the coin is dated 36-37...

We only know of one Pre-Principate coin of Caligula from Carthago Nova.

Usually the portraits for this issue are so crude, they are of no facial/ hair value for study.

SPAIN, Carthago Nova. Tiberius, with Gaius (Caligula) as Caesar. AD 14-37. Æ As (29mm, 11.71 g, 3h). Struck AD 33-37. Laureate head of Tiberius left / Bare head of Gaius left. RPC 182; SNG Copenhagen 502.

This portrait of Caligula is the only accepted portrait of Caligula prior to becoming princeps (emperor). This portrait is actually VF compared to most specimens I have seen.
For problems with the dating of Tiberian Coinage see RPC and A. Banti and L. Simonetti, Corpus Nummorum Romanorum (XIII Florence: 1977 pp. 141-50 deal with dating to 34 A.D. (PolliniJWAG, note 28 for more explanation. Also: "Aspects of the Principate of Tiberius", Historical comments on the Colonial coinage issued outside Spain, Michael Grant- The American Numismatic Society - Numismatic Notes and Monographs(1950) There are some issues with inscriptions and dating in Banti Simonetti.

Recently I've got one more Sinope's bronze, this time it's Augustus - Julius Caesar, dated ANXXIII.
So, help me, please, to ID this coin correctly, with reference, if possible.
I couldn't find any other example.
Diam. 20-21 mm, weight 6,54 g

Thanks in advance!
