Help identify coin please! (Arabic?)
« on: January 12, 2013, 01:32:21 am »
Hello everyone!

Here is the first coin I officially cleaned!   ;D

Anyways, now I'm trying to identify it, and am completely stumped.

I'd love some help, along with maybe some tips of how to best identify coins.

To me, this coin looks like an ancient Arabic coin. I did some searching on google, and found that it best matches the coins made during the Mamluk dynasty based on the style of the writing, the size of the letters, squarish shape, and how the coin print is shifted on one side.

Am I on the right track? Are these usually the features you look at when identifying? As this is my first coin, I really don't know how to go about this identification process...

Thanks in advance.

Please be informed that no numerals on these fulus.
If you read Arabic you can see " Sit-wa-thalathin" on the top of
your coin.

Bakkar or Tanit, can you gentlemen point me in the right direction where I can do more research on Mamluk coins? I would like to know more about this including it's value. Minerva and I can't seem to locate a a good source myself. Thank you very much!

Coins like this don't have any monetary value. They are valuable as ancient (or very old at least) artifacts that can, if you want, teach you a lot. In theory it could be a super rare coin, since I know nothing about these but in reality most coins are very common and even rare coins not valuable. When cleaning coins you have to accept the premise that you will not see more than a fraction of your money again if you sell the coins. If you can accept that, have fun.

Thanks Tanita! It's in Arabic though, by I guess it's better than nothing.
