You have a very good eye for a nice coin quadrans, and selecting examples that complement each other when seen as a group.

Late antiquity is of special interest to me, and barbarous Roman coins are an excellent way to get a tangible “feel” for that important age. If you want something rare or unique, even an inexpensive one might easily be the only known example. Who made them? Were they semi-legitimate currency? Where were they made? Are they evidence for a shortfall in the production of official coins? These questions might not have the obvious answers we expect.

The “barbaricstyle often looks Celtic or Germanic which suggests origins on the frontiers of the Empire. I have never looked into the references concerning the locations of hoards, but I’m willing to bet hoards are not associated with large cities.

To modern viewers the artwork can be very appealing; you can almost see your barbarous imitation, CONCORDIA MILITVM type, #15 as a little metal portrait by Picasso!

I have only have examples from the 3rd century. Looking at yours I think I need to look for some good 4th century examples of my own.

Best regards,
Steve

very nice coins
for me these specimen originated outside the border of the empire , possibly outside the danube
and could be the first attempt of the goths to create a coinage

they are very different from the barbarous imitation that circulated in gaul and britannia in this period

Very interesting, great for study, thanks for sharing. They do all have same basic stylistic elements, with #1 and 2 from the same exact hand. that engraver has a rather funky style!

I find these coins simultaneously fascinating and frustrating since the hope of learning the details of their production seems slim.  This is made worse by the traditional dismissal of such coins by 'scholars' and the political situations that separate so many coins from their find spot information.  Certainly these late Romans are interesting but to get the 'big picture' we will need to include earlier coins as well.  My first example is known to have been found in India so might not be completely in line with the 'barbarous' theme of those interested in things Celtic but even separating these coins into major groups can be out of my skill set.  As I see it, we must be careful not to rush to assume anything about one unofficial coin based on knowledge of something different.  Telling issues of necessity by local authorities from counterfeits by local criminals will not always be easy.

I am very sorry I missed this thread until now, but very happy that I discovered it now!!!

I find these imitations much more fascinating than most of the genuine article.. ( on the whole.. ) , and I am also pleased to hear the celtic influence I find obvious in the artistic style of many even late roman imitations mentioned.. ( It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one!! ) ,  It is also worth noting that the average price of a decent Barbaric radiate has more than doubled in the past 3 years... I have tried to accumulate a decent quantity of these coins, with an emphasis on north europe and especially UK found coins for later study, ( perhaps when I retire...) but it is becoming harder and harder to locate them at an affordable price ( for me, anyway ) , perhaps this is a good thing, the more popular and desirable they are the more research will be done...

I also present my latest aquisition, I know price is not generally discussed here, but as I am neither bragging nor looking for sympathy, only discussing price increases in recent years perhaps its ok... 105Kr. £10 ish or $14 ish .. I did not mind paying it, as I love it, but 3 years ago it would have cost next to nothing.. ( relatively speaking) ... A great coin in nice "non-roman " style....

  Anyway, more Barbarics I say!!

  Best wishes,

  Lee.

I just recieved this  Barbaric imitation of Tetricus II "C P E TETRICVS CAES" a few days ago.

I find its Celtic style, and the fact it is so well centered for such an odd shaped flan absolutly charming!!  +++ ;D +++

I have a few Severan era barbs, particularly those attempting to copy eastern mint coins.

How about the obverse die match with these two....?? COS II copies

This one is too wild for the sometimes exotic style of the IMP VIII issue.

This one is copying a Rome mint type and is in half decent style (ex Forvm)
