Domitian as Caesar under Titus - Left portrait sestertius
« on: November 22, 2012, 07:56:51 am »
Hello everyone.

Domitian's sestertii struck during the short reign of his brother Titus are in general less scarce than those struck under the long reign of his father Vespasian.

Yet left portraits are always rare: actually this Minerva fighting reverse - RIC 297 - is rated R2 and is missing in all major museum collections, while the right portrait - RIC 295 - is rated C and I have two specs in my own collection.

I love the portrait and Minerva either.

Kind regards.

Alberto

FD,

That is really a beauty. The reverse in particular is fantastic :)

Excellent find and you know who to call when you decide to part with it, right? ;)

Regards,
mz

157d is the old number, in the new edition is 296 (rated C).

The difference is in obverse legend: this coin has DOMITIANVS, while mine has DOMITIAN.

Kind regards

Alberto

157d is the old number, in the new edition is 296 (rated C).

The difference is in obverse legend: this coin has DOMITIANVS, while mine has DOMITIAN.

So it's actually that legend variant that makes your coin a rarity.

RIC 296, head left with DOMITIANVS, rated C, BM 233, Paris 241.

RIC 297, head left with DOMITIAN, rated R2, quoting specimens in Munich, Oxford, and Vienna, not illustrated in RIC. This is the only COS VII sestertius type RIC lists with that obv. variety, head left with DOMITIAN.

Nice to see what that variant looks like: I've printed out your image for my files!
