Dear Joe,

Just a quick note to let you know that I am keeping you in my thoughts (as I am sure many others here are doing as well) as Sandy bears down on North Carolina.  I'm relieved that the website is still up, but could you periodically let us know that you and your family are safe?  And is there anything that can be done from a distance to help you?

You and yours are always welcome here in Louisiana if you need to get out of the area.

Take care,
Shannon

The eye is supposed to pass directly overhead here later tonight. Just lots of rain so far and some gusty winds. A few small branches down but thats about it so far. Supposed to increase between now and late tonight.

Apparently the sinking was almost as dramatic as its film appearances. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/29/hms-bounty-pirates-of-the-caribbean-hurricane-sandy_n_2037079.html?utm_hp_ref=entertainment&icid=maing-grid7maing5dl21sec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D227246

Down in FL we do not give much thought to a 1 Category storm but this one is far worse than any we have seen or been through it seems
much worse than a typical 1.So hope everyone stay safe as I know what its like to go for weeks without power due to a storm.Ours was a category
4 but a small and fast moving storm. This one is HUGE

So do not understimate these storms as they can bring a lot of suprises.

A tidal surge is more to do with the volume of water being moved, and the amount of space it's moving into, than with the wind velocity. A big storm moving more water can probably do more damage than a small one, and I'm not familiar with the geography or the water depth. It didn't take anything like a hurricane to drown 1 836 people in 1953, for instance, but that was down to the geography of the North Sea, which is shaped like a funnel.

Pretty much a non-issue in the DC area as well.  SOme high wind.  Rain.  Not much worse thatn other rainstorms here.  Some terrible power to that storm further north though.  Have you all seen the photos of the Jersey shore?

My power was just restored within the last hour.  It had gone out Monday evening.  And there was no escaping to the office, as my office had no power throughout the week.  Things were cold and dark and boring here...
