Unusal Antonius Pius coin (Sestertius or Drachm)?
« on: October 23, 2012, 07:31:44 pm »
Dear Collector Buddies,
I'm collecting Roman coins for well over 30 years now.
Today I bought a Roman coin at a numismatic collectors fair.
I was told that it's a Sestertius of Antoninus Pius and I could identify it only as a AE Drachm from Alexandria (Koln 1639).
If anybody has some more info about it I'd be very-very happy as it doesn't seem to be a sestertius to me (27mm).
Thank you all for your help in advance,
Kindest regards,
Dave

Hi Dave!

Looks like Marcus Aurelius or Commodus, his son.

If you can give us some or most of the legends, someone here will be able to attribute it for you.

Even better, I'm sure someone will be able to attribute it on sight :)

Regards,
mz

Thank you Mark!
I'll browse through RIC and COHEN, maybe I'll be able to find it.
I only found greek ones, but these inscripts are more or less Roman ones...
Thank you again!!
Dave :)

PS: All I can read is:
      Obverse: ANTONIN...AVG..RPXXIX
Reverse: .......COS III, SC in ex.

Marcus Aurelius, As, 175 AD, reverse Tiber reclining left beween boat and urn from which water flows, cf. RIC 1145.

Seems to be an unusual bust type seen from front, either draped and cuirassed, which would match RIC 1145, or cuirassed only, a new bust variety.
