Leave the gun, take the Canoli!

Well I spent the last 3 weeks in southern Italy.  The National museum in Reggio is closed for renovations but the Riaci bronzes are on display as they are being conserved and cleaned in the government building.  Sorry photos not allowed.  However the small yet well equiped Sibari National museum does allow photos and I managed to get some of the coin collection.  Particularly a hoard of republican denarii.  It also had some nice large Republican bronzes.  The highlight though was a Brettian warriors armor found in his tomb, discovered in the nearby town of Cariati.  If you can read Italian I've posted the details:

the hoard was found in the foundation of a villa

it consists of XX coins
the oldest one is a III century BC coin while the youngest is dated 42BC

the hoard might have been formed in 40bc during the war between caesar and pompeus

in a nutshell

Yup, and that the time frame is consistent with the abandonment of the site around 40 BC

Those museums know nothing. Caesar died in 44 BC after defeating Pompey and later his sons. With the exception of Sextus who held in Sicily  was finally defeated by Octavian and MA.
IC coins.

Hi Jay,
next time you 'll go to south Italy I suggest to visit the Museum of Policoro too, a few miles east of Sibari. it's amazing! Unfortunely photos are not allowed. There are some of the finest funeral sets of the classical world. And near it you can visit the ancient site of Heraklea. Continuing east you'll find two other wonderful museums: 20 minutes of car for Metaponto and other 20 minutes for Taranto.

I spend my holidays near Sibari in summer, and I go often to the museums in the area. I add some pictures I took this summer at Sibari, maybe was the same day of your visit and you'll recognize you in some reflections of the showcase glasses. Cheesy

Taras I try to go every year.  We have a family house south of Cosenza but I spend most of my time near Crotone and Isola di Capo Rizzuto.  The museum was deserted when we were there which is always nice. I try to go to new towns and cities each time. Brindisi will be next. I have almost all of the same shots you do!
