My first aureus
« on: September 15, 2012, 05:31:56 pm »
Well, I finally went ahead and did it: I just purchased my first aureus. I think it's a fairly common one, but I just love it. The feeling of holding one on the palm of my hand is undescribable!

Laureate head right
NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS
SALVS
Salus seated left.
7.32 gr.
RIC 59; Calico 443; Cohen 313; BMCRE 87

Big step for me. My next buy will probably be a safe...

Regards,
Ignasi

Thank you all for your comments! As I realize that a venture into these coins must also have an investment component, I decided I'd go for high quality, rather than quantity, as I think I (or my heirs) will be better off should we ever need to sell. This means, unfortunately, that 11 more aurei is out of the question! Unless, of course, I get lucky with the lottery...

Ignasi

Thank you! Really proud of it, too! I really should stop handling it, but I just can't resist. The photo is the dealer's, but as they are here in Madrid I saw the coin in hand before buying it.

What a beauty! I would be very proud to own it as well Ignasi.

A great coin on so many levels, but in terms of Roman proper gander it is particularly interesting. Salus was the personification of health and prosperity for both the individual and the state. Many citizens must have prayed to this sympathetic goddess for their personal well being and it would have been assumed by Nero’s administration that her association with the Emperor would emotionally link the health of the state to the individual viewing the coin.

Of course if you were a cynic you might see a smug, overfed dictator apparently accepting an offering dish by the slim goddess of health and say to yourself “ I hope she put some hemlock in it!”.

Best Regards,
Steve

silvernut,

What a beautiful coin!

Looks like it came right from the mint with wonderful details on the reverse.

Congrats on a really great acquisition!

Hi to all,
I apologize in advance but I'm still learning  :) I hope I am wrong, but I do not have a good feeling about this coin.

Firstly, portrait of Nero and the legends on this coin looks (to me) a bit dull, not as they should be on an aureus,  but what really puzzles me are the small pimples among the letters and on the field.

Please, would some expert  be so kind to explain me the presence of these pimples?

Thanks in advance, Exergus

Hi Exergus,

No need to apologize. I'm no expert, and that's why I only buy from reputable dealers.

Having said that, I did do a bit of homework prior to purchasing the coin, If you look at this die match coin (recently auctioned again), you'll notice that the defects you point out seem to be embedded in the dies, and are not exclusive of my coin. I know that doesn't prove anything, but it seems to give a little more comfort to the authenticity of the coin.

Of course, I will gladly hear different opinions (well, gladly might no be the word...; but I'll listen!).

Regards,
Ignasi

Hi Ignasi,

Probably my doubts arised from the fact that gold coins are easier to forge, in the absence of patina,  though also falsifiable...

Regards, Exergus :)

The scary option is that they are two well made casts... :-X

I thought so too, but the second coin has been auctioned at very reputable houses 3 times in the last 10 years. I would have expected someone to detect the forgery...

Of course, could be that the second coin is the real one and mine is the cast made of the other one, but I thought that was unlikely.

My dealer assures me his source is 100% honest...

I don't know, I guess there's always the possibility, but I think I did all I could to ensure it's authentic prior to the pruchase (yes, I checked all the online fake databases too).

Ignasi

From the pictures I have no doubts about either coin.

Cast duplicates of course usually have identical flan size and identical centering, which these two coins do not.
