Caracalla from Trajanopolis: Vase of?
« on: February 26, 2004, 08:29:07 pm »
Small (AE16) but lovely Caracalla from Trajanopolis that arrived today  :).  Moushmov lists two possibilities of what's in the vase.  It's either three corn ears or is "full of flowers."  I suppose this would be corn ears?  :-\  Can't find an online illustration for this either.  Scarce perhaps?  ;)

It looks like it has three of whatever it contains, and it doesn't look much like flowers, so I'd go with the corn-ears.

Trajanopolis is one of the less common cities of Thrace, although its coins are somewhat more commonly encountered than those of e.g. Plotinopolis and decidedly more common than those of Nicopolis ad Nestum.

I'd also like to add that the city issued a fairly extensive series of small bronzes under Caracalla. The quality of workmanship on those is much better than what is the case with most small provicial bronzes. Your piece, e.g., has a very detailed and characteristic portrait for a ca 16 mm coin.

Varbanov (engl.) 2772, scarce (R4 from 10). Cites Schönert-Geiss 1987, 125. Calls it 'Amphora containing three corn-ears'.

In case anyone has forgotten: "corn ears" is the British designation, in America we would say "wheat ears".
