Pixodaros Didrachm
« on: June 18, 2012, 02:49:45 pm »
I have always admired some (though not all) of the Pixodaros silver coins, and I am very happy to have added this specimen to my collection recently.

Pixodaros, Satrap of Caria, AR Didrachm, c. 340-334 BC.
Obv. 3/4-facing laureate head of Apollo.
Rev. ΠIΞΩΔAPOY, Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding long sceptre left and Labrys
19-20 mm, 6.98 g
SNG Aulock 2375

I agree. A very nice coin with an obverse of good style but that reverse is something special.

Really really nice quality Greek.

The portrait of Apollo is absolutely beautiful.

Apollo looks haunted!

A worthy CotD indeed!

And I admire, tremendously, the 3/4 face with its sense of personality.

Lars, what a nice addition!

I too love the 3/4 facing portraits, and the Zeus Labraundos rev. is compelling!

Thanks for sharing!

Superlative detail. I don't think I've seen a reverse on this series as nicely detailed and preserved and the overall quality of the surfaces is outstanding for the type. I can see why you as a dealer who must see a few of these cross the counter, add this one to your collection. Congratulations.

I am spellbound!  :o

The detail in Apollo's hair, every little fold of Zeus' cloak. I'd love to hold it to see the relief of the figures.

A true work of art.

Thank you! I very much like the detailed reverse, but it was the adorable style of the obverse (plus the surfaces) that made me keep it.
