Help with identification of mint
« on: May 29, 2012, 03:02:12 pm »
Today I got this coin, Maiorina of Julian the Apostate.
I hope this is enough text visible, because I am not completely cleaned coin.
Unfortunately the text of the piece was written mint, the first letters are not visible, and visible part of the text is unknown to me.
The maximum diameter of 26 mm, weight 8.8 grams
I can not identify the mint, can little help.
Thanks
Shandorr

it is from Lugdunum

LVGDOFFS

The exergue on this coin reads “LVGDunum OFFicina Secunda” (second workshop of Lugdunum)

RIC VIII Lyons 236

Lugdunum (now called Lyons) was named after the Celtic sun-god, Lug or Lugh.

Julian II tried to revive paganism and the reverse of this coin symbolizes his pagan beliefs. This upset some of his Christian subjects and the people of Antioch even demonstrated against him “shouting…that his coinage had a bull and that the world was overturned.” (Socrates, Hist. Eccl. 3.17)

That coin is plenty cleaned. I wouldn't touch it further. Nice example in my opinion.
