Augustus? As?
« on: May 26, 2012, 08:29:21 pm »
This one has me stumped. From going through the Handbook of Roman Imperial Coins (purchased at this very establishment a few years ago), then browsing through countless online resources, all I come up with is...

Obverse: I'm guessing Augustus, bare head, cAESAR legend left (I think it's an "E" not an "I")
Reverse: Not much to go on with the reverse, so I'll guess Santa Claus or Hellboy.

AE or copper (can't tell colour), Approx 26 x 24 mm, thickish flan, weight unavailable.

Yes, Augustus. And you should act fast on that "bronze disease."

Damn! I'm colorblind. I was hoping it it was crud stuck in a small countermark.

Thanks, Akropolis! Do you have a preferred treatment for such cases. This one is slow-growing, so I wondered if heating til dry and sealing with parafin would do until I have more time...

Heating it will stop it temporarily. I would advise against sealing it with parafin. It will  make it harder to treat when you get around to it. Search this site for "bronze disease" for lengthy discussions on what to do. I don't have any with BD and don't buy them if there is the slightest hint of it.

Mechanical cleaning will be probably the first necessary step but will leave behind a deep hole in the coin.

... but will leave behind a deep hole in the coin.
... as I can confirm from my own, grievous experience!  :'(

Based on the portrait style, this is the provincial 'AVGVSTVS' in laurel wreath type.

I don't think the big hole will be very problematic here. But the obverse is nice and the coin worth saving.

So, your saying, areich, that I have a nice as - one worth saving?

I think you're right about the variety, Galaxy - once assumed, you can see hints the wreath elements in hand.
