Three unidentief Greek coins
« on: May 11, 2012, 11:12:39 am »
I'd guess, based on the coins I own, that these are related to pergamon, athena and herakles. Does any of these coins ring an instant bell?

The reverse of the top coin gives me the impression of Mesebria, Thrace.

Re: Molinari: I believe so.
Thrace, Mesembria. Circa 350-200 BC. AE 11mm. Helmeted head of Athena right / META in the spokes of a wheel. SNG BMC Black Sea 278.
Sound right? That's off wildwinds. Thanks Helvetica!!

Bottom coin is most likely a Mysia, Pergamon issue, but hard to tell with flat reverse. I'd give it that ID tentatively. ca. 200-100 BC?

Right/Center coin: Hard to know with the encrustation on reverse, but the style of Zeus's laureate bust suggests Pisidia, Komama. Circa 1st Century BC?

Last two are speculative, not even tentative! Good luck with them!

Thanks Gentlemen! The flat reverse doesn't make things easier of the two coins!

The bottom one is probably indeed from Pergamon:

If you rotate the obverse by 180 degrees, then you will recognise the head of Herakles.
But: This type was minted by Lapsakos as well, so it could also be from there:

Nicely done Altmura.

Seems like 1 positive Mesembrian ID, 1 likely Mysian ID.

Altmura, are you saying the Helmeted figure (Athena?) on the bottom reverse has Herakles on the obverse? I do see it now that you point it out. Very interesting...

Oh, here it is!

Pergamon, Mysia. AE Chalkoi, 0.83 g, 10.48 mm. ca. 300 BC. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet / Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress. BMC 22; Sear 3958.

Third coin down.BMC 22/Sear 3958

Gentlemen, if there would be a Nobel price for numismatics I would award them to you! Much appreciated!
