Domitian Portrait OTD
« on: April 23, 2012, 05:42:38 pm »
This denarius was minted in 85 AD right after Domitian slightly lowered the fineness of his denarii to Neronian standards. He had previously raised the standard of the denarius in 82 AD to the levels set by Augustus but apparently financially he could not maintain those standards. The coins were still minted at a higher standard than those under Vespasian or Titus and would remain so until the end of his reign.

This coin also illustrates the high artistic standards Domitian demanded of his die engravers. The addition of the aegis along with the fine style idealistic portrait shows the care the mint took in the minting of these coins.

RIC 332 (R2), BMC 78, RSC 179a
Rome mint, 85 AD
Obv - IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P IIII; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.,with aegis
Rev - IMP VIIII COS XI CENS POT P P; Minerva adv r., with spear and shield (M1)

I think the usual description would be a "neat coin" - but that does not reflect my impression correctly.

This is a well preserved but also ancient looking and still delightful fresh survival of 85 AD. !

You just have to love the insolent, condescending look on his face!

Very well-wrought, indeed!

I had no idea! I bought it from a seller who had no provenance for the piece. Thanks for letting me know!

A wonderfully sympathetic portrait David, that makes the much maligned emperor appear both very complex and very human. Clearly a star coin in any collection!

Best Regards,
Steve
