Help with Alexandrian tetradrachm 2
« on: April 22, 2012, 10:13:06 am »
Hi all,

I have been trying to identify this tetradrachm. Based on the portrait I think it is Diocletian but I am not sure. I am also unable to figure out the minting year on the reverse. 7.2g, 19mm.

Can anyone help me out with this one?

Please ignore the orange bit on the obverse. It was some fluff on the coin.

Thanks!
Tjaart

Maximianus I think. I read MA :Greek_Xi: across the top.

Tjaart:

I think it is Diocletian:   ...D(I)OKLHTIAN.... (years 1-6)

The obverse bust type is unclear-- I don't think it's cuirassed (Milne k7) but perhaps drapped and cuirassed backview (Milne type K2)?

So: k7 is years 1 to 6; k2 is years 3 (only as ETOVC G) to 6.

If the bust is k2, it should have a star on the left side, which I can not see-- so maybe k7 is correct.

I can not confirm the date, but I would guess year 4.

Iwaniw,

Would this coin http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=232601 match mine? That would make mine a year 6 instead of 4?

Tjaart:

Sorry I can not read the date on your coin. All that I can say is that it is dated from years 1 to 6. The grade of the coin makes it very difficult to identify it completely.

I had an eye on the Forum coin for some time. It's a rare year 6 issue. I added it to my picture files some time ago.

Sometimes if you take a plaster cast you can make out the date better.
