Need identification help for a ~54mm Indo-Greek coin
« on: April 12, 2012, 04:08:33 am »
It's quite heavy (definitely 150+ gms) and diameter is ~54mm.

Seems like an Indo-Greek coin of King Eucratides

It is a replica in modern style, wrong metal and weight.

best regards,

Also very poor style for the type of coin it is imitating.

That should go into the files with good old 'Mr Tooly' for worse tool job ever. And what's with the numbers at the bottom of the reverse? The date?  :o

Can't be an old coin at 150+ grams.  Most likely a casting or stamped token.

;D  So bad its funny... the crappiest attempt to imitate the unique 169 gm gold 20 stater coin of Eukratides 1 Megas I have ever seen.

The unique authentic coin (I hesitate to say this farce seeks to imitate it) is part of the collection in the Bibliothèque nationale de France....

From Head's Historia Numorum (http://www.snible.org/coins/hn/bactria.html):
Eucratides, king of Bactria and India, circ. B.C. 200-150. AV Medal- lion of 20 staters’ weight, the largest ancient gold coin in existence, now in the Bibliothèque Nationale at Paris, obv. Bust of king with helmet adorned with bull’s horn and ear, rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ ΕΥΚΡΑ- ΤΙΔΟΥ, The Dioskuri on horseback (Rev. Num., 1867, p. 382). Also AV

By the way the authentic one doesn't come dated 1615 in English numerals  ;D Just the thing for an eBay auction slot! 8)
