Hi,
I bought this coin a while ago and it took ages before I really started researching into it.
I'm quite perplexed :
weight is 10,02 grs and diam. is 22 mm (i.e the coin is very thick).
This
weight is very unusual - to say the least -.
I sent the description and pictures to the "Cabinet
des Médailles" in order for one of the conservateurs to have a
good look at it.
She came back to me with this view (that I translate) :
"this coin should be a pentekontadrachmon from the serie known as "Arsinoé au kappa" (205/4 - 180 BC). The
weight should be around 14 g, so pretty abnormal ;
reverse is also unusual (
legend doesn't correspond to known examples, especially the lettering). Reference is
Svoronos, 1904 n° 1242".
When I go to the 1242 of the
Svoronos on line, it is a reference to a gold
octodrachm (i.e the double of a pentekontadrachmon in gold) from Kleopatra I represented as Arsinoé I, the letter K behind and a dotted
border which is consistent with my specimen.
So, is it
standard from
Svoronos to have the full spectrum of gold and silver coins "going down" from the mnaeion/octodrachm gold reference (but not mentioned/described by
Svoronos apart from the mnaeion) or, for this precise issue, was the mnaeion the only known and described issue ?
My main guess is that this could an ancient fake although (accepting that I'm not a specialist at all) if so it looks well done. It has a lovely
patina but if this was made even in the 19th century this should be highly possible.
This coin is a mistery to me. Any views would be very welcome.
Many thanks in advance.
