AR Dirham, al-Salih Ismail Ayyub
« on: April 08, 2012, 03:57:04 pm »
Hello all,

I bought this coin five years ago, the only description given was that it was a Dirham from the reign of al-Salih Ismail Ayyub.
Being that this is the thread for the identification of Islamic coins, I would love to know more about this Dirham.

Even if there is a translation of the Arabic text would be great to know.

I looked at a similar Dirham here to find an Arabic text with translation, however I can read some Arabic and the "text" given does not match the phonetic translation at all.

Coin wieghs 2.96 grams, is 20 x 20.5 mm in diametre.

Thank you.

Not exactly.
Obv. in the right segment is read و اربعين (and forty).
And this means that the coin - Crusader Imitation of Ayyubid al-Salih Isma'il. Bates Type I.A (Thirteenth century Crusader imitations of Ayyubid silver coinage, 1974).
In Zeno #109184, #108932 or #79627

I will add your image in the Zeno.

Many thanks to both of you.
I found the receipt for this coin and obviously the e*ay seller did not know it was the Crusader imitation type of Dirham, merely listed it as "Ayyubids of Damascus, Al-Salih Ismail AR Dirham", it cost $15 in 2007.
Anyhow I am glad to have the actual Arabic legends for this coin.
Many thanks again.

Out of interest, the meaning of the obverse field legend would translate as "The king of blessed life and religion Imad Ismail" whilst the meaning of the reverse field legend refers to a "Al-Mustansir" would he be the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir, AH 623 - 639? The other part of the legend seems to refer to Abu Jafar Al-Mansur, the second Abbasid  Caliph?

Thank you, I think it is important to know the cultures behind all coinage, it is great to learn.
I'm glad my example is now on Zeno :)
