Your Help Please with this Alexander Drachma
« on: April 05, 2012, 12:11:59 pm »
Hello,
I would appreciate your help with this Drachma of Alexander.  It was  bought many years ago, 31 to be precise, and was described in the auction catalogue as having been minted at Rhodos. However, looking in the online resources, I have not seen any Alexander drachmas minted at Rhodos. It seems that Rhodos only minted his tetradrachmas.  This coin has me really intrigued.
The coin weighs 4.11 grams and measures 17-18 mm in diameter. The coin is darkly toned, which is not apparent in the photos.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Eduard

The style of the obverse mainly is very similar to the ones from Chios. There is one like yours on wildwinds that is attributed to Chios (Price 2319v2). Given the style and the monograms that are clearer on the WW example, I would also attribute it to that city (but as a variant of Price 2324, wich is closer I think).

Thank you very much, Minos. I finally know when and where my drachma was minted.
I had assume 'Po' indicated Rhodos as the mint.

Regards,

Eduard
