Interesting Greek Obol for ID
« on: February 18, 2012, 09:20:16 am »
Hi,

Broad flan AR, 0.50gr.  The reverse is very similar to Prokonnesos coins in Mysia but the obverse is quite different!
Anyone has any idea on this coin?
Help is appreciated to put this coin in its order.
Thank you in advance.

Dear Board,

Obverse: Forepart of horse to left ( similar to Kyme didrachm in Aeolis )
Reverse: Oinochoe and :Greek_Pi_2: ( similar to Prokonnesos in Mysia )

Can someone help to identify this coin please? Thank you.

I think it is really from Prokonnesos in Mysia.

Isegrim says:
PRO:   MYSIA INS
PO :   PROCONNESUS
PZ :   Between -400 and -280
   Obverse
VSG:   A
VT :   ANIMAL PROTOME L / HORSE
VF :   LET A
   Reverse
RSG:   P
RT :   OINOCHOE
RF :   LEAF IVY
   Technical details
M  :   AR
GR :   9(1)
GEW:   0.49(1)
   Bibliographical references
ZIT:   SLG WEBER 5250(1) / COLL MONTAGU(1)

On the plates of the Weber collection you find the number 5250 here: http://people.virginia.edu/~jdk3t/WeberPlates/Weber191.html

Looks similar to a tiny coin I have .83g of Thasos. Has the same amphora.

To me the reference of the Weber collection with the attribution to Prokonnesos is convincing enough ;) .
