Phonecian AE 3, Arados?
« on: January 14, 2012, 05:13:28 pm »
Hello all,

Below is posted a coin I bought. Searching through the Wild Winds list for coins of the Phonecian cities, Tarsos, Arados, Berytos, Sidon and Tyre the "AP" monogram seems to only occur for the city of Arados. But I am not sure.
Seems to be Phonecian writing below the galley.

Phoenicia, Arados, 187-185 BC ; Duyrat 2221-2236.
Tyche/ AP above Galley, Phoenician date below.

It is hard to read the legend above the galley. The galley itself looks more Tyrian or Sidonian to me. I would not exclude Ascalon either. What is the size and weight?

The galley did strike me with its style.
The weight is 4.57 grams and the diametre is 18 mm.
On the obverse I have noticed two " :Greek_Lambda: :Greek_Lambda:" in the right field, right of the Tyche's nose.

Looking at those listed for Askalon, none seem to be similar. Either the Tyche is veiled, or the galley is facing to the right.

Thank you so much Rover for taking the time to post these scans. I will save them and study them.
From what I see, the coin appears to be closes to 2230.
Frederique Duyrat's work on these coins is exceptional.
