Hungarian? But...?
« on: December 14, 2011, 02:38:42 am »
This coin bothers me. I think it is a fryling from the 1400's. But the officina mark appears to be a rune, which I've read was banned everywhere in Hungary but Transylvania. Yet I can't find any Transylvanian coins from this period to compare it to. I can't tell if the coin is upside down in the photo, either.

Any ideas or leads?

Do you recognize the mintmark? Because the mintmark uses a rune, which was banned in Hungary by this point, I had to wonder if it really was from Sigismund, or was an imitative from a neighbour. Essentially, the cross and the rune don't go together - but my knowledge of this is still very limited. I know many of the basics, but none of the many exceptions that make this period so very interesting.

Ok this is the quarting  from hungarian King  Sigismund :Huszar 585.
Officina mintmark I combined some different other letters like A,B,C, or D.
Probably more then 60 variation exist of course any other different letter combinations.

What is a rune?

Runes were letters of an alphabet designed to be carved into wood or stone. It was associated with the pre-Christian religion of northern Europe, which I imagine is why it was banned.

The letters are Gothic, and look like I-I, indicating that the coin was minted in Bratislava under a collective authority.  Minted 1430-1437.
