Divus Valerian II, Antoninianus, RIC Vi, 24 ?
« on: December 08, 2011, 08:42:59 pm »
I'm struggling with this one, and don't wat to clean it further until certain what I'm dealing with.

The listing calls it billon, but it looks AE. Size should make it an ant.

My biggest problem is that if the reverse is an altar, it doesn't match any I can find, as it ha squared corners, yet the artwork on the obverse suggests it is NOT barbarous.

Any thoughts, and with it, cleaning advice given its roughness?

Many thanks...

Thanks for checking, Pekka K! I think you're right in that he has a beard, which I'd never noticed, and a shorter name. There are some differences in key elements on the altar, I think, though it's almost certainly altar/CONSECRATO.

Either that, or it's a 1909-S VDB Lincoln penny - it's still too close to call. I'll get out the Dremel...

So there is a variant of the DIVO CLAVDIO with a simplistic altar, RIC.256 C.39. So now it's about his face shape, size and chin.

There are also a ton of imitatives out there of this coin series. This coin could simply be one of them.

Thanks, guys. I think this may be an imitative after all. I don't think I have the skill to clean it further without more harm than good. It's too bad, because I was really hoping to see the full altar, which hints at being cleanable.
