Contemporary Imitation of Maximillian II
« on: December 08, 2011, 12:50:43 am »
Hello,

This coins appears to be Hungarian and attributed to Rudolf, dated 1596.

Are there bronze/copper coins that are identical to silver coins of this period, but of another denomination?  I bought a large lot of medieval coins, many of which appear to be copper, with different degrees of silverwash clinging on.  Other coins appear to be naked bronze/copper.  Is this normal?

Hello!

Yes, copper issues exist.  They are contemporary counterfeits.  The better quality ones were made by local nobility in most cases.  Some are crude copies, with garbled legends -- These were sometimes made by local blacksmiths.  Nobility usually coated their coins with a silver wash.
