Titus' Dupondius - obverse legend seems unrecorded
« on: December 07, 2011, 07:36:30 am »
I've purchased this coin from a german dealer who usually sells mostly greek and provincial coins.

The coin is fairly worn, but still fully readable.

It's similar to RIC 503 (Thracian mint) but obverse legend is different and apparently unrecorded.

Its measures are: 28 mm - 11,36 g - die axis 6

I'd like to get opinions.

Kind regards

Is this the correct reading of the obv. legend on your coin?

IMP T CAESAR DIVI VESP F AVG [P] M

Here, for comparison, is Titus' standard legend at this mint:

IMP T CAES DIVI VESP F AVG P M TR P P P COS VIII.

So the new legend has CAESAR for CAES and omits TR P P P COS VIII.

Yes, the obverse legend is IMP T CAESAR DIVI VESP F AVG [P] M (actually I can read the P, but it doesn't appear in the picture).

Thanks.

A rather rare 'undated' Flavian. Neat!
I take it that there are no doubts about its authenticity.
Nice find.

Harry Sneh informs me that Incitatus on VCoins recently offered a second specimen of this dupondius (27 mm, 12.9 g), from the same obv. die but a different rev. die, which Harry has purchased.

Curtis,

thanks for noticing.

Much nicer than mine, by the way.
