Suggestions on getting rid of the green crud?
« on: October 16, 2011, 05:58:38 pm »
I believe this would make a good "before" picture, but I don't want to ruin it.  It's hard to tell but I think there is some good detail under there.   I would love any suggestions.

          Thanks, Nemo

The metal on the coin is very good indeed , I recommend white Vinegar bath over night.
then put under the direct sunshine for a day, or under running hot water for around 10 minutes, then dry it and rub it on a soft cloth.
best.

Salem has cleaned thousands of coins more than me, sounds like a good course of action.

Thanks Chris
forgot to say that it is better to use glass container :) a coffee cup will be good.
try to leave the coin in angle to have both sides available for the vinegar at the same time.

Thanks for the input, a vinegar bath it is.  I'm very excited to see what happens.  I'll post the after.

Salem, thanks for the advice!  Just a couple hours in and the difference was amazing. Three hours into the soak I took it out and went after some of the crud with a toothpick.  Two hours more, a rinse with hot water, more gentle toothpick and here it is.  Should I keep going?

That is a nice SHNT SHLOSH , Jewish war Prutah.
soak it more , leave it over night, Vinegar wont hurt it, after you take it out clean under hot running water with a brush, let it dry , then leave it a lone for another day.
send the new photos and up to the surface and color of the coin, I will tell you what to do :)
best.
Salem

P.S. this dirt will go with vinegar, dont try it with all kind of dirt folks :)

Drum roll please...............  Of course, I only have the obverse as a "before."  The reverse wasn't quite so bad , but still amazing difference.  Is there a way to bring out some contrast?  This has been a great learning experience, thanks again Salem!

Very impressive.

I have a question for Salem.  What was going on with this coin?  Was it completely uncleaned and had that green stuff on an otherwise almost patina-less surface??  Or, do you think it had been cleaned already once and then the green stuff "grew" on the cleaned coin?

Hi Shawn
simply ,this coin was found on  oil lamp, Jar, Cave or some thing like that, it wasent found directly on the ground and it  never mixed with the soil and never was exposed to weather changes directly (rain, snow, summer heat over the years), this kind of dirt is the best ever, it is just on the surface of the coin, and dosent go deep as heavy incrustation does .
the coin need to be darken now and thats it, no more work needed.
best.

Will leaving it in direct sunlight help to darken the coin?

VERY nice results!  You are using pure undiluted vinegar?  I have several hundred uncleaned Prutah, I may try it on a handful.  I have always hesitated to use vinegar, but with these results I need to give it a shot.

Best,

Alfred

Looks to me that the use of vineegar was recommended based on the type of dirt on this particular coin.

Yup, pure undiluted vinegar.  I used a toothpick to gently work on the corrosion, but much of it just melted away with the vinegar.    I left the coin a total of about 12 hours.  It did lighten the coin as well, but otherwise there were absolutely no negative affects.  Thanks again to Salem!

Beautiful results! Remember though, this coin was treated that way due to no patina being on it in the first place. Vinegar WILL eat through the patina on patinated coins.

Yes Alfred, dont use white vinegar with other kind of dirt, this way just for such coins with solid metal and that was not exposed to weather changes , or mixed with soil, you wont get good result with the uncleaned Judaean coins that comes in lots from Israel for sure, and dont use it with coins that have been already  treated with acid .
you are welcome Nemonater !!! better use real name I think :)
best.

I have very decent prutah I bought about six years ago.  They do have dirt, but also green encrustations.  I put about six in white vinegar before leaving the office, I will see how they turned out tomorrow.
